Editing:
I can provide two different levels of editing services – copyediting and developmental editing. In copyediting, my goal is to help you improve the clarity and effectiveness of your writing. In developmental editing, my goal is to help you reach specific goals you’ve identified for your work.
Copyediting:
- Correcting grammar, punctuation, spelling, and other mechanical errors
- Identifying ways to make the manuscript smoother and more readable (e.g., word choice, use of active vs. passive voice)
- Noting inconsistencies in the formatting of the manuscript and suggesting changes
Developmental editing:
- Helping you to see the “big picture”
- Editing for flow, organization, tone, and strength of your argument
- Flagging unclear spots and/or suggesting minor rewrites
- Assisting you with resolving problems you’ve identified in your writing
- Helping you to clarify how your audience will shape your approach to your manuscript
- Helping you get “unstuck”
- Offering a “fresh pair of eyes” and giving you feedback from the standpoint of an interested reader
Additional information:
Rates. I charge $35/hour for most projects, plus direct expenses such as photocopying, long-distance phone calls, and postage for shipping hard copy of manuscripts.
Working style. I can provide edits either electronically or in hard copy. I will include a cover page of general comments at your request.
Getting started. I would be happy to edit a few pages of your work at no charge, as a way of testing out whether we would be “a good fit.” I can also provide estimates on shorter or longer projects, if requested. And I will certainly keep you updated regarding hours spent on your project as we move forward together.
Clients. Most of my clients are individuals, including professors, graduate students, and people who own their own businesses. I have edited web sites, marketing copy, trade and academic book manuscripts, and academic papers. I enjoy working with English-as-a-second-language clients.
Grant Writing:
I am a fundraiser by training. I can provide a variety of services, including:
- Developing a case for support
- Identifying and prioritizing possible funders
- Drafting grant proposals
- Coaching organizations as they develop new fundraising programs
- Providing advice on the process of grant seeking
I especially enjoy working with nonprofit organizations, both those with already-established grant seeking programs and those who are just entering the field.
My philosophy is to empower organizations to be as self-reliant as possible. For that reason, I prefer assignments with a more limited scope, in which I might be covering a temporary staffing gap, helping an organization to launch a new program, or providing advice and templates an organization can use in future grant seeking on its own.
My fee is $35/hour plus reimbursement of direct expenses.
Transcribing:
I am available to transcribe digital audio files at a base hourly rate of $20 per working hour.
Writing:
I occasionally take on writing projects of all sizes and descriptions. Just ask!
Usually, I prefer to work from home on assignments that can be completed through telephone interviews, web research, and email.
Rates vary, depending on the size and type of the project. I would be glad to provide a free estimate upon request.
